Butterfly Window
Decal Card Instructions |
What you'll need:
Happy Vinyl from Happy Rubber Stamps
(embossable vinyl)
Happy Rubber Stamp's T102 Beautiful Butterfly stamp
Greeting of your choice (ex: Thanks!)
Glass paints (Gallery Glass)
Small paint brush or two
Water glass with a bit of water
7" x 5-1/2" blue folded card
6" x 5" piece of acetate
Double sided tape
White text weight paper (10" x 6" folded in half to
fit inside the card)
Decorative scissors
Black pigment ink or Fabrico black
Black embossing powder
Baby powder
Fluffy paint brush or cotton balls
Regular scissors
Colored pencils or markers
1. Use a piece of Happy Vinyl just larger
than the butterfly (3.4" x 4.5"). Sprinkle baby powder
on the vinyl and use the brush or cotton balls to make a thin
coating of powder on the vinyl. Stamp with the black Fabrico
and black emboss. The baby powder is to keep the static from
holding all the embossing powder on the vinyl.
2. After heating, take a towel (or your
jeans) and remove the baby powder.
3. Use the glass paints to color the
image (see Note 1). Allow to dry.
4. While paint is drying, take the blue
folded card and measure a square opening on the front, 4.5"
x 4.5". The opening should be a half inch from the bottom
and both sides. Cut out the opening with decorative scissors
(see Note 2).
5. Use the double sided tape to adhere
the acetate in the window.
6. The text weight white paper should
be taped inside the card so the window has a white background.
White is the only really good color to use for this.
7. Stamp your greeting above the window
on a scrap of white card stock sponged around the edges with
a cool color matching the colors on the butterfly.
8. By now the paint is dry. Cut out
the butterfly image leaving a 1/16" margin around the outline
of the image.
9. Place the butterfly on the acetate
window. It should stick very easily.
Note 1: Painting the vinyl can be tricky.
After doing this several times, this is what I've found to be
the best way. First, don't use the paint brush to "paint"
the vinyl. It's very smooth and doesn't make it easy to get good
coverage. Use the brush to scoop and place the paint where you
want it. Use a tapping motion, not dragging motion. You also
need to try to get an even coating of paint. The darker colors
will look uneven if your paint is uneven. Yellow doesn't seem
to have a problem. You may need to get a few coats of paint,
also. The lighter colors can dry almost clear with only one coating
of paint.
Note 2: To cut the opening of the window
with decorative scissors, mark your opening with a stylus or
pencil. Cut a large "X" in the middle of the square
with a craft knife, then cut a diamond. Most of the middle will
fall away and you'll be able to finish the edges with the decorative
scissors.
These things are so cool! They will
stick on your windows, your drinking glasses, your eyeglasses
(if the image is small enough), your favorite coffee mug, etc.
They are great for holiday images for decorating your windows,
too! I'm getting started on Halloween stuff in my spare time
(yeah, right).
If you're interested in getting some
Happy Vinyl (embossable, too!), it's only $6.00 for 8 sheets
of 8-1/2" x 5-1/2". Perfect size for all your window
decals.
