Submitted by: Jan Donovan (N. Carolina) 1) Preservative for paste, finger paints, and modeling compounds are simple. You can use powdered alum, oil of cloves, oil of cinnamon, lemon extract or an antiseptic, such as Listerine. Most of these items are listed in the recipes, but can be substituted for any listed and can be found in most pharmacy stores, health-aid sections of grocery stores, or in stores like WalMart and Kmart. 2) If flour is called for, use a plain non-self-rising wheat flour unless otherwise specified. 3) All measurements should be exact for success. 4) Never pour leftover mixtures down the sink drain. You may clog your drainpipes and have an expensive plumber's bill to pay if you do so. 5) If you do not have a painting pedestal on which to place your bowls or figures as you work with modeling compounds, you may want to use small cookie tin or the lid to a coffee can. You should be able to turn your work easily. 6) Dextrine, used in some craft recipes, can be purchased in most grocery or drug stores. It is a powdered or granulated sugar substitute that usually contains saccharin. 7) Most ingredients and materials for these recipes can be purchased in a grocery store or drugstore with the exception of resin glue, Plaster of Paris and some chemicals; these may be purchased at a lumberyard, hardware store or hobby/craft store. When using these ingredients, be sure to use caution around children. |
